Learn to Fly - Algodonales, Andalucia, Spain

Learning in Spain

Learn to fly in one of the most beautiful areas in Europe. Algodonales is renowned for its blue skies, stable weather patterns, delicious tapas and warm welcome.

There are many good local flying sites and the early spring and late autumn weather is usually perfect for paragliding training.

We have been running courses in Algodonales for nearly five years and they’ve always been a great success. Not only are these courses very efficient for getting through the BHPA syllabus, they’re also a great social holiday with like-minded students.

Algodonales is a traditional "pueblo blanco", one of the famed Andalucian white villages. It is situated on the northern slopes of the Sierra de Lijar and dates from around the sixteenth century.

The village is surrounded by orchards and olive groves which make a picturesque contrast to the brilliant white houses. The centre of the village is dominated by the magnificent church of Iglesia de Santa Ana and a lovely central square surrounded by orange trees.

Algodonales has all the local amenities of a Spanish town with many cafe bars and restaurants. Normally, pilots are happy at the end of a long and fulfilling day to stay in the town and soak up some of the Spanish atmosphere. If you would like to venture off further into rural Spain in the evenings then we recommend hiring a car from the airport. There are many car hire companies based at all the local airports.

Algo. as it’s commonly known to flyers, is ideally situated for paragliding being one of the furthest southerly points in mainland Europe. Normally, high pressure dominates the region giving lots of sunshine and light winds. Moreover, it has a multitude of small slopes ideal for ab initio training and larger user friendly sites for more advance flying.

For non-paragliding guests there are plenty of alternative outdoor activities or perhaps you’re happy sat under an orange tree reading a good book.

All the courses in Spain are restricted to a maximum of 6 students (so book early). The school has excellent facilities to assist your training, 4x4 vehicles the latest paragliding equipment, radios and media equipment. Training days are normally long, arriving back in the town around dusk.

The aim of our courses are to tick off as many BHPA tasks as possible. Normally, it’s easy to complete the Elementary Pilot course within 6 days. It is possible to complete the Club Pilot course in 6 days, but it represents more of a challenge than the EP course.

We all learn at different speeds, so progress can vary. Active Edge treats every student as an individual and strives always to give first class tuition and value for money. We encourage students to be part of the group but allow them to progress as an individual. The camaraderie felt in the group is an important factor, helping to create a positive environment in which to learn. Our number one priority is always your safety and this is something we don’t compromise.
